Korça Municipality, Major Mr Sotiraq Filo in colloboration with the director Zamira Kita of Korça Culture Centre "Vangjush Mio" and Curator Genti Tavanxhiu (Artist - Sculptor) are organizing the 8 International Sculpture Symposium in Korça (Albania) , this year it will be the Special Edition only for Asian Artist .The city of Korça, where the tradition of artworks finds its best incorporation, has become hospitable to the chisel of the local, regional and international sculptors.
Korça was the first city where this activity was organized in Albania and international artists created public sculptures of a modern and monumental character. This is an historic event for Albania and for the history of Albanian art.
The sculpture symposium of Korça themed “Park Sculpture”, started in 2008 with the intervention of the ex-mayor, Mr. Niko Peleshi, who was also its originator. A man with a vision for the future because by promoting the Sculpture Symposium, for the first time in the Albanian history, he would contribute in the creation of a museum of contemporary art, by recording in the historic memory of the city, the different forms of artistic expression through enabling experiments on the function of artworks in new urban spaces.
It takes place in an environment appointed by the City Hall of Korça and allows the citizens become spectators of any moment of the working process and see for themselves how the artists turn a stone block into a work of art.
For the first time in 2014, the Ministry of Culture of Albania approved the project presented by Genti Tavanxhiu and contributed to the event.
Making use of this instance, I thank the Albanian minister of culture, Ms. Mirela Kumbaro, who showed special interest in the promotion of the event.
The Mayor, Mr. Sotiraq Filo, by supporting the continuation of this project has decided to host it again in the summer of 2017.
In this edition will participate 5 Asian artists, who with the realization of new works will contribute in the expansion of the museum to reach a number of 47 sculptures.
In the 2017 symposium will be organized also laboratories for children and stone-carving enthusiasts, who will serve for the education of new generations.
The 8 symposium will take place from 1st – 12th July 2017.
The theme is free.
The organizers will provide the participants with the following materials:
- The stone is a local limestone . The dimension is 1 m cubic max
- the electricity (220 volts)
- compressors Air
The committee will take care of the following in connection with the symposium:
- The Municipally of Korça will pay 1.400€ for each sculptor, who will be complete his or her work on time
- Accommodation expenses such as Hotel, breakfast, lunch and dinner (only for the artist ).
- Local Transport between Tirana Airport and Korça city .
- Program with local or cultural spots during the symposium
- No travel expenses.
- Sculptors will bring their own tools, such as electric machines and any material which they will personally use in order to create their works
- Personal health insurance for all participants is their own responsibility.
- Working hours are set as 08:30 to 19:00.
However, alterations can be made on days that the program requires.
- The Artist is responsible of being present in the work area during work hours and complying with the work program.
- All artists are deemed to have agreed to being present at the opening and closing ceremonies.
HOW TO APPLY:
5-6 sculptors will be invite. The selection will be based on the submitted proposal for the sculptures.
In order to participate, send the following documents:
- Short CV with personal photo
- 5 images of the artist’s previous works;
- Sketches, photographs of the proposed artwork model showing different angles
- Eventual short description of the proposed artwork in English
– The designs sent by the applicant artists should be genuine and not previously implemented.
-Each symposium participant will create one sculpture designed by him or herself.
- Artists can send a maximum of two different designs.
- As the art works will be placed on public areas, they should be of appropriate size as per the urban scale.
- I invite the participating artists of the published competition to avoid presenting projects adressing political or religious ideas, or any other that could offend in any way the civil opinion and morals. Since this is a project aiming the visual esthetic improvement of the park and the whole city, they should apply to a certain civil decorum.
- The application portfolio, must be sent to the email address or the address gentitavanxhiu@gmail.com until February 10, 2017.
Incomplete applications cannot be considered.
